YCN Newsletter 24 - CeramicAM Brazil from the organizer's point of view

The 1st Brazilian Meeting on Ceramic Additive Manufacturing (CeramicAM) was held from 19 to 20 September 2024 in São Carlos, SP, Brazil.  The event was organized and hosted by the São Carlos School of Engineering of the University of São Paulo (USP) in collaboration with the Brazilian Ceramic Association (ABCeram), the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), and the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of São Paulo (IFSP).

Opening Session

The meeting hosted 128 participants, from undergraduate students to professionals, from 9 countries, 7 Brazilian states, and 45 institutions (including companies, universities, and technical institutes). The event included 6 invited talks from renewed experts from academia and industry. There were also 35 abstracts presented as posters; among them, 18 were selected to be orally presented as a 3-minute pitch. CeramicAM was concluded with a practical workshop on ceramic 3D printing at the university laboratories.

Poster session and coffee break

The event had valuable support from JECS Trust, which paid a travel grant for two European PhD students to attend the event. Also, they sponsored the “JECS Trust Best Oral Presentation” Award, which was won by Natalia Fijol, from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Nobula 3D. The event was characterized by the high quality of the scientific presentations and invited talks, the friendly environment for networking and new collaborations, and the integration of students, researchers, and industry professionals. According to Prof. Ítalo Camargo, the event exceeded all expectations: “As an event focused on such a niche topic, we initially had no idea how large it would become. Discovering the size and engagement of the Brazilian community interested in additive manufacturing of ceramic materials was both surprising and deeply rewarding. The exchange of ideas and the enthusiasm of participants throughout the event were truly inspiring and highlighted the importance of initiatives like this.”

Ítalo also emphasized the event's significance for the national context. “It was a unique opportunity for our research group, particularly for undergraduate students, who were able to present their projects and connect with experts from Brazil and other countries. For many, it was their first time in an international environment, hearing and speaking English. This experience fostered not only academic growth but also personal development, expanding their horizons and inspiring new perspectives.”

Mateus M. Morais, one of the organizers, says: “The event was directly inspired by ECerS young Ceramist Additive Manufacturing Forum (yCAM). I had the opportunity to attend three editions of yCAM, which was really positive and constructive for me. I wanted to have something similar in Brazil: a fresh collaborative environment so that ceramic additive manufacturing could also flourish in our tropical country.  That is how the idea for CeramicAM was born. I felt really grateful after the event, hearing the positive feedback from the participants. We were able to reach our goal and contribute to the Brazilian ceramic community.”

The success of the event was possible by the generous support of the funding agencies and sponsors. CeramicAM was funded by the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), Journal of the European Ceramic Society Trust (JECS Trust), and Agência de Inovação e Transferência de Tecnologia do Instituto Federal de São Paulo (Inova-IFSP). In addition, there were three gold sponsors (3D Ceram Sinto, Duraprinter3D, and Lithoz), one silver sponsor (Engecer), and two bronze sponsors (AMS and Farcco Tecnologia). Fundação de Apoio a Física e a Química (FAFQ) provided administrative support.
