2023 YCN Student's Evening
The 2023 Student’s Evening was organised by YCN, with the support of the JECS Trust, during the XVIII ECerS Conference on Tuesday 4th July 2023 at 20:00 at Ninkasi Gerland, Lyon, France.
This event was the opportunity for the 250 Young Ceramist researchers registered, that were, Master and PhD students including early stage PhDs to meet new friends, extend the network and to listen to the presentation of Moritz Weiss and David Menne from Fast Cast Ceramics GmbH, entitled “How to start-up. From research and product idea to … ?”.
After that, the winner of the 2023 YCN Workshop, Katelyn Kirchner from the Pennsylvania State University - USA, presented again her winning talk “Beyond the Average: The Criticality of Spatial and Temporal Fluctuations in Oxide Glasses”.
Finally, the YCN Committee announced the 3 winners of the 2023 YCN Photo Contest:
- The 1st place was awarded to Ana Castellanos Aliaga from Instituto de Cerámica y Vidrio, Spain, for her micrograph “Along the shore of the peptide sea”;
- The 2nd place was awarded to Amousa Nima from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, for his picture “Mxene Dragon Head”;
- The 3rd place was awarded to Camila Ribeiro from University of Aveiro, Portugal, for her micrograph “When materials mirror nature”.

We are looking forward to seeing you on 2nd September 2025 during the next YCN Students Evening in Dresden, Germany !

YCN Newsletter 31 - Event Overview - Ceramitec 2026 by YCN Committee member Petar Kotevski
YCN’s participation at ceramitec 2026 in Munich from 24th to 26th of March 2026, represented a key step in strengthening ties between young ceramic professionals, academia, and industry. The exhibition provided an international setting where research, innovation and industrial application converge, enabling meaningful engagements. Our main objective was to position YCN as an active interface connecting early-career professionals with industry leaders.

Interface Engineering: High-Temperature Interactions Between High-Entropy Ceramics and Metals.
My research explores high-temperature interactions between high-entropy ceramics (HECs) and metals, with a focus on joining strategies for extreme environments. By understanding how metals wet and react with these advanced ceramics, I aim to design reliable interfaces for applications such as composites, coatings, and ceramic joining with functional properties. This work contributes to improving the performance and durability of materials used in demanding industries such as energy, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
