YCN Newsletter 16 : Feedback from Winter Workshop 2023 by Szymon Skibinski
The JECS Trust offers annual financial support to young researchers, PhD and Masters students, enabling them to attend the highly-regarded Winter Workshop organized by the American Ceramic Society at Daytona Beach. We are thrilled to announce that Szymon was selected as one of the grant recipients for the Winter Workshop in 2023. As a member of our young ceramists community, Szymon is sharing his invaluable experience with us all.
I had the pleasure of attending the Winter School and conference organised by the American Ceramic Association - 47th International Conference and Expo on Advanced Ceramics and Composites in Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. During the training sessions, I had the opportunity to meet various experts in the fields of ceramics, glass or composites. During the Workshop topics such as writing, effective communication and the importance of work balance were covered, as those skills are essential for success in job market, especially for young scientists. Moreover, the Workshop helped me to improve my language skills as well as to participate in discussions and enhance my interpersonal skills. During the training sessions, I had the opportunity to listen to lectures and talk with many scientists and industry professionals from e.g. NASA, General Electric, the University of Ottawa and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and others. Additionally, it was an opportunity to make many valuable contacts with PhD students and experienced scientists from around the world. The networking activities such as the networking mixer, and trip to the Kennedy Space Center were excellent occasions to make new collaborations, exchange ideas and experiences with other PhD students and learn about NASA science, technology, and engineering.
During the conference, I also presented the current results of my PhD thesis. During the presentation, I introduced the audience to composite scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration based on calcium phosphates and polymers of bacterial origin - polyhydroxyalkanoates.
I would like to thank the European Ceramics Society and JECS Trust for their financial support as I received the grant to attend the 2023 ACerS Winter Workshop.
