PhD Student - CEITEC BUT in Brno - Czechia

Microstructural Tailoring of Advanced Ceramics via Ultrafast Sintering

Can we use extremely rapid heating and cooling not simply to sinter ceramics faster, but to access microstructures that conventional processing cannot easily produce?

This PhD project will explore Ultrafast High-temperature Sintering (UHS) and Flash Sintering as tools for deliberate microstructural engineering of advanced ceramics.

These techniques drive ceramic systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium, opening exciting possibilities for manipulating the competition between densification, grain growth, grain-boundary evolution, and phase transformations.

The project will focus on establishing fundamental processing-microstructure relationships and identifying kinetic conditions that enable rapid densification, suppression of grain growth, and retention of metastable or otherwise non-equilibrium microstructural states.

What can you expect from us?

The PhD will be carried out within the Advanced Multifunctional Ceramics group at CEITEC Brno University of Technology (CEITEC BUT), in Brno, Czech Republic. CEITEC offers a genuinely international research environment, with students and researchers coming from many different countries. For someone considering a PhD abroad, you certainly won’t be the only international student around!

You will also have access to modern laboratories and research infrastructure for materials processing and characterization. Most importantly, we aim to provide a friendly and collaborative environment where you can develop your own ideas and grow as a researcher.

I would be very happy to hear from students with a background in materials science, ceramic engineering, solid-state chemistry, physics, or related fields, particularly those interested in ceramic processing, sintering, and microstructural characterization.
