Report on the December 2023 BIOCAM Workshop and Master Class
BioCeramic additive manufacturing is a revolution in the personalized treatment of various pathologies, particularly in the regeneration of various anatomical parts of the human body such as dental, maxilofacial, skeletal or cranioplastic.
Given the growing interest in these topics, the first international Workshop dedicated to ceramic additive manufacturing for biomedical applications was Jointly organized in Mons, Belgium, on 6th and 7th December 2023 by the Belgian Ceramic Research Centre (BCRC) and the European Ceramic Society (ECerS), with the support of the EMC (Additive Manufacturing) and Bioceramics ECerS Networks and of the JECS Trust.
The event combined invited presentations by renowned international researchers with significant contribution in the field from different countries:
- Bikramjit Basu from Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengalore, India
- Marc Bohner from RMS Foundation, Bettlar, Switzerland
- Laurent Grémillard from INSA – Mateis, Lyon, France
- Hamada Elsayed from University of Padova, Padova, Italy
- Martijn van Griensven from University of Maastricht, Merln, The Netherlands
- France Lambert from CHU - Liège, Liege, Belgium
- Anne Leriche from Ceramaths, Valenciennes - Maubeuge, France
- Paola Palmero from Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy
- Andrea Zocca from BAM, Berlin, Germany
- Jean-Marie RAQUEZ - SMPC - Univ. Mons, Belgium
Some numbers about the Biocam Workshop – there were:
- 10 invited presentations
- 15 oral presentations accepted
- 9 posters presented
- 80 participants attending coming from 20 different countries - Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Latvia, Spain, Germany, Italy, Brazil, India, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Algeria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Slovenia and UK – 60 Regular participants and 20 students.
The Workshop was followed on 8th December by a one-day MasterClass during which international experts shared their experience of different additive technologies (Robocasting, Pellet Additive Manufacturing, Powder Bed Processes, Stereolithography) through theoretical lectures and practical applications on the BCRC equipment:
- SLA - Nadia EL FEISS - ADMATEC - Alkmaar (NL)
- ROBOCASTING - Laurent GREMILLARD - MATEIS - Univ. Lyon (FR)
- FDM/PAM - Helio JORGE - CTCV (PT)
- POWDER BED - David GROSSIN - CIRIMAT - Univ. Toulouse (FR)
There were 27 participants to the Master Class: 15 students, 4 lecturers and 8 regular participants coming from 12 countries: Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Latvia, Portugal, Brazil, Croatia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy and Slovenia.
The Workshop and MasterClass were a great opportunity to strengthen the links and collaborations between researchers, clinicians and industrialists but also to inspire a new generation of scientists on this topic of major societal importance.
