Open Ceramics - Call for Papers for forthcoming special issue: ‘Bioceramics’
Bioceramics are currently used in different medical fields, especially in orthopaedics, dentistry, and hard tissues surgery.
While structural ceramics (like alumina, zirconia and their composites) find application in dentistry and bearings in joint arthroplasty, bioactive ceramics and glasses are applied in the regeneration of hard and soft (typically in the form of composites) tissues.
Last developments deal with matrix/cells/signals constructs (termed scaffolds) able to boost new tissue formation and with the digital fabrication of implants, to be more precisely customized on the patients themselves.
The still remaining challenges (e.g. the bio-integration of inert ceramics, the low reliability of calcium phosphates and bioglasses, the inflammatory response to implants, the ability to guide proper cell differentiation and wound healing) can be successfully addressed through collaborative approaches, and specifically joining together skills from different areas such as materials science, engineering, biology, medicine, chemistry, modelling and design.
This Special Issue especially addresses results from collaborative research teams, showing how the cooperation between ceramists and experts from complementary fields can boost knowledge and technological development. Research results obtained in the frame of European Projects implying multi-disciplinary approaches between different areas to fabricate better bioceramics are particularly welcome.
Authors are kindly invited to submit contributions dealing with (but not limited to) the following topics:
- Bioceramics and biology/medicine: cells interaction, in-vitro and in-vivo studies, antimicrobial properties
- Surface engineering and functionalization
- Design and fabrication of novel /advanced/ multifunctional bioceramics and bioglasses
- Modelling of bio-mechanical properties joined with experimental studies
- Bioceramics in the frame of collaborative researches with clinicians, surgeons, biologists, engineers, experts in modelling and design.
