2025 ECerS - FIRE Summer School - Marc Huger

 Multi-scale material examination

Prof. Marc HUGER

Institute of Research for CERamics (www.ircer.fr), Limoges, France

This advanced course explores effective thermomechanical properties in refractory materials, seen as composite systems, and emphasizing coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch phenomena and their impact on material performance. The lecture bridges theoretical frameworks with industrial applications, progressing from atomic-scale property prediction (through ab initio calculations) to macroscopic behaviour (via modelling techniques based on homogenization).

Advanced numerical methods model microstructural evolution under thermomechanical loading. Two case studies will illustrate the effect of CTE mismatch: Aluminium Titanate based materials demonstrate that a well-controlled microcracking can strongly enhance thermal shock resistance, while high-zirconia fused cast refractories reveal the effect of martensitic transformations. This presentation will correlate predictive modelling approaches for microstructure design and experimental validation
